Muhammed Unais- Winner of Queerala Diversity Scholarship 2017

Muhammed Unais wins Queerala Diversity Scholarship.

The Queerala Diversity Scholarship 2017 (https://queerala.org/diversity-scholarship-2017/), announced last month, as an encouraging token for young Malayali Queer individuals, had received 34 applications. The scholarship intended to support LGBTIQ persons who wish to pursue further studies while contributing to advocacy interventions.

“The short listing process primarily focused on intersectionality and Muhammed Unais’ profile stood top notch”, said Rajashree Raju (Young India Fellow, Asoka University and Board Member, Queerala), who led to Scholarship process.

Muhammed Unais- Winner of Queerala Diversity Scholarship 2017

Unais, who identifies himself as a Muslim-Queer-Feminist has a post graduation in English Literature. He wishes to pursue Teacher Education course and thrusts his interests in cultural depictions to lessen the gap between community visibility and social acceptance. As stated in his application,

“I strongly believe that social acceptance and visibility of the queer community are both interconnected and so I chose to be openly queer without masking my identity, even though I belong to a very pious and conservative family that does not support or understand sexual and gender diversity”

we hope to inspire many.

Team Queerala wholeheartedly congratulate Unais and the scholarship amount, Rs 7000, shall be handed over during Queerala’ next monthly meeting, on June 24th at Kochi.
